Citizens of Earth was a decent RPG from Atlus that came out in 2015. It had a neat idea and drew heavy inspiration from Earthbound; however, it was riddled with technical problems. I personally liked it but never expected to see a sequel come out, especially four years later. Somehow, the game is getting a sequel called Citizens of Space, which was announced by SEGA today. Give the teaser trailer below a watch.
In Citizens of Earth, you starred as the Vice President of Earth. You had to go around and complete quests for various constituents to get them to join your party. Each character had unique combat abilities and a quirky personality. It was a charming experience, but not something that stuck with me.
Citizens of Space sees you becoming the Ambassador of Earth. Unfortunately, on your first day, Earth goes missing and you must begin a journey to find your lost homeworld and unite the galaxy. The teaser video mentions a new combat system and deeper recruitment mechanics. However, with this just being a teaser, there aren’t any actual details as to how these systems have been changed from the original. Hopefully, a more in-depth trailer is coming soon.
I’m excited to see what the team has in store for this sequel. That said, it’s worrying that the game releases in 12 days and this is the first we’re hearing from it. The game also looks washed out in most of the screenshots the team has released thus far, which has me concerned. I’m hoping the game builds upon the first and delivers a quality experience, but I’m expecting the worst given the limited info we have right now.
Citizens of Space is coming to Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One on June 18.
