CHROMATOSE, the successfully Kickstarter funded visual novel and JRPG inspired by the likes of Persona 3, Catherine, and Monogatari, has been getting tons of updates through AkaBaka’s Twitter account this past month. Some highlights include screenshots of the game’s backgrounds, UI updates and improvements, character art, and dialogue screens.

UI+background art is where I want it for this scene finally
Also added in a requested feature where characters have descriptive names until they introduce themselves.#indiedev #vndev #gamedev #gaming #indiegame pic.twitter.com/SyYpYpnYds

Can’t lie, seeing that overdone trope getting demolished is oddly satisfying to me.
Finally got to subvert that stupid trope #indiedev #vndev #gamedev #screenshotsaturday pic.twitter.com/dL6k0hHB9B

Save/Load menu update mockup #indiedev #vndev #gamedev
Looks pretty slick when it pops over the animated menu pic.twitter.com/88f70fLs8o— AkaBaka – CHROMATOSE (@ChromatoseDev) May 6, 2019
Implementing the settings menu, not very exciting, but it's a very highly demanded feature #indiedev #vndev #gamedev pic.twitter.com/gXIIBGXBAi

Isaac's room overhaul, it's gonna look sick animated. #indiedev #vndev #gamedev pic.twitter.com/U40h3efTg4

Still have some menus to fix, but CHROMATOSE is now running at 1280×720 with fullscreen toggle. Basically you get 200px extra on the sides and it really shows
Shame I had to manually redraw almost every scene in the game so the screen would fit #indiedev #vndev #gamedev pic.twitter.com/9pmQjKEAM8

Added polish to the VN menus and such, which are now also working in 1280×720! #indiedev #vndev #gamedev pic.twitter.com/HyeUG7reR9

Adding atmosphere and depth to all the background art! Update 2.0.0 is gonna be the biggest upgrade in polish that we've seen so far #indiedev #vndev #gamedev pic.twitter.com/Sb5BmS7nIt

Previously I had shown a sample of the pause menu that premiered in the previous Kickstarter update, which featured a visual flare reminiscent of Persona 5. It seems that since then, both the the pause menu and save/load menu UIs are now fully functional and look great.
Pause menu is now fully functional and implemented, save/load is looking how I want it too! Sound design next! #indiedev #vndev #gamedev pic.twitter.com/6Fw2my42o8

Nearly done with all the polish for 2.0.0

The latest update (as of May 23rd) features a sneak preview of the battle system and UI. And I really like it so far. The animations have impact and the visuals are surprisingly unique. I was wondering how well the card battle system would translate in the game and so far it looks to be quite good.

The official account also retweeted a few work in progress pieces by the composer for CHROMATOSE, giving us a nice taste of the soundtrack. So far the music sounds lovely, and conveys a strong sense of atmosphere. I can’t wait to hear the full soundtrack in the game proper:

You can still try out the free demo here and check out all the screenshots and gameplay video here and here. CHROMATOSE is set to release for PC and Mac sometime in 2021. If you still want to support the title, the devs opened a Backerkit page, which allows supporters to buy preorder bundles that mirror the Kickstarter pledge tiers.
