Our comrades at Eurogamer published an interview with Yoshinori Ono of Capcom. I don’t think I need to introduce Yoshinori Ono if you’re reading this in the first place, but here goes. Ono is the current face of Capcom. He became one of the studios’ most prominent developers after he handled the role of Producer on Street Fighter IV, and how big of a success the game was. Street Fighter IV revived fighting games in the late 2000s and paved the way for many niche anime fighters I don’t play myself but like seeing tournaments of. Games such as Persona 4 Arena or Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax definitely wouldn’t have released if not for Street Fighter IV‘s influence.
Anyway, Yoshinori Ono was asked by Eurogamer what happened to Deep Down, an action RPG that was announced in February 2013.
Yoshinori Ono answered: “the original team is clearly no longer together at this point, but people might have noticed that we’ve kept the trademark registered, and it’s not been completely given up on.”.
Indeed, Capcom kept the trademark for Deep Down going for years now.
Yoshinori Ono continued: “Every year we examine titles we’re doing in future, and we bring up projects to approve and move forward. There’s not much I can say about it, but if you’ve noticed we’ve kept the trademark it means we haven’t given up on the title completely.”
Basically, this means Capcom might resume development on Deep Down one day. However, it’ll definitely be different than what was originally planned as it’ll be with a new development team. It probably won’t release on PS4 anymore either. I personally don’t think Deep Down will ever release. But even assuming it does, it’ll be different, and you should just give up on it if it piqued up your interest years ago.
Teaser trailers for Deep Down are included below so you can properly say farewell.
