The name of Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty coming later this year has seemingly been revealed. This year’s Call of Duty has interestingly not been unveiled yet, leaving many to wonder if the rumors about it being a brand new entry in the Modern Warfare series are true. This has all but been officially confirmed in the past few days, and today Kotaku News Editor Jason Schreier took to Twitter to add fuel to these flames and reveal the name of the next game in the Call of Duty series. It is simply titled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
I can confirm this is true, and that it’s hilarious. The first one was “Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare” so obviously the fourth one is “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.” Video games are absurd https://t.co/Ghb1m2srC4

As Jason Schreier’s tweet confirming LongSensation’s claim says, this name change is a bit confusing. Typically, the entry that kicked this Call of Duty subseries off is simply referred to as Modern Warfare. That being said, its official full title is actually Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, leaving room for Activision to drop the 4 on either side of the colon punctuation mark and still have the title technically be new.
Hopefully, this decision won’t confuse consumers, though it could have also been done to not carry the baggage of the previous three Modern Warfare titles. A new game within this subseries hasn’t released since 2011 and Jason Schreier is claiming that this new game is a soft reboot, so in some sense it may have been wise to simplify the title:
“Soft reboot”

Still, this shows games are not immune to dumb reboot name syndrome just like movies. Whenever Activision and Infinity Ward decide to officially unveil Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, DualShockers will be sure to let you know right away. Last year’s entry, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, is currently available to purchase on Amazon if you haven’t picked it up yet.
