What started as a bunch of coincidences quickly spiraled (pun intended) out of control to create rumors that a new Banjo-Kazooie game was in the works at Yooka-Laylee developer Playtonic. It started with a tweet from Playtonic’s Ed Bryan saying “well, I never really had plans to use this again” with a picture of a Microsoft bag. This led people to believe a collaboration or possible acquisition with Microsoft was possible. Meanwhile, a description on Gavin Price’s LinkedIn profile suggested that Playtonic would eventually be working on a game that Price “always thought would be game #1.”
While that isn’t much to go on, many found that it, along with Banjo and Kazooie’s recent inclusion in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, served as enough evidence to prove that Playtonic was working on a brand new Banjo-Kazooie game for Microsoft. Some even thought that Microsoft planned to by Playtonic. That being said, Playtonic has confirmed that this is definitely not the case.
“Hey everyone! We wanted to address the speculation currently swarming our mentions,” their recent message begins. “We hate to be the bearers of news that isn’t what you want to hear, but we thought it best to come out and say – we aren’t working on a new Banjo-Kazooie Game and we remain an independent studio. That being said, Playtonic did say “we would love to work with the bear and bird again,” though the developer was keen to point out “that ball isn’t in our court.” Check out their full message below:

While it is unfortunate that Playtonic isn’t working on a new Banjo-Kazooie game, this rumor didn’t really ever have much substance. Still, it doesn’t seem like Playtonic will stop making games anytime soon. If you want to check out the developer’s latest outing, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Layer, it is currently available for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on Amazon.
