AI: The Somnium Files has been officially delayed to September 17th in North America, as announced first by Zero Escape creator Kotaro Uchikoshi and then confirmed on the official Spike Chunsoft blog. Uchikoshi made the difficult announcement on his Twitter account in a series of status updates:
I sincerely apologize to everyone waiting for AI. The release date of AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES has been changed to September 17…

I'm in two minds about this matter. One is "I would like to deliver AI to everyone as quickly as possible." And the other is "I want you to play AI with the best and perfect quality." It was really an agonizing decision that we chose the latter.

We would appreciate your understanding and cooperation. Could you please give us two more months…? Then we absolutely promise to give you the best and perfect game. We are really very sorry for everyone looking forward to AI. https://t.co/i0mpGzrnPY

As extrapolated in said tweets, he felt conflicted about whether to release AI: The Somnium Files as soon as possible or to delay it to ensure the best possible product. In the end Uchikochi decided on the later, still worried about fans’ reactions to the decision as he apologized for the situation.
I'm almost crying because of so many kind words of everyone. I am very happy to be blessed by such amazing fans. Thank you so much!!! I really love you all!!!

One look at his replies and the overwhelming support is palpable. His last tweet on the matter expresses his great joy at the positive reception from those eagerly awaiting the game.
The title was first revealed during a panel at Anime Expo 2018 in Los Angeles and the collaboration has been receiving occasional updates since then. Zero Escape series creator Kotaro Uchikoshi and Spike Chunsoft finally unveiled the project in full earlier this year, previously code-named Project Psync.
The story is set in near-future Tokyo and prompts the player to investigate on a series of mysterious murder cases, with character design by No More Heroes artist Yusuke Kozaki. While the themes of the game are artificial intelligence, but also widespread surveillance, and love, which are all associated with the term “AI” and its pronunciation in both Japanese and English.
AI: The Somnium Files will release physically and digitally for PS4 and Nintendo Switch, and digitally for PC.
