In an interview with CNBC, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick says most of its games are on track following COVID-19.
When asked if working from home would impact game development at Activision, Kotick said “I don’t know that we quite know yet. Most of the things that we have in production and development are on track for now. I think we’ll have to really reassess that in a month and in three months.”
Prior to COVID-19, Activision released Call of Duty: Warzone, a new free-to-play battle royale game in the series. Since its release, the game has gone onto have 50 million players checking the game out. In addition to Call of Duty: Warzone, Kotick says games like Candy Crush are doing well and are “seeing record levels of engagement and people are getting the benefit of entertainment at home for what we do.”
“We’ve been doing things like encouraging our employees to upgrade their home broadband to the highest bandwidth service and we’re paying for that, we had equipment available for take home so everyone in the software development, art or animation functions, we made equipment available so they had the newest most secure devices, but I think it’s still too early to know what the consequences [on] development will be for the next year or so,” says Kotick via a write-up from VGC.
With most of Activision’s titles being on track, it’ll be interesting to see if the rumored Call of Duty: Black Ops reboot will make its supposed release date this holiday. The game is set to take place during the original Black Ops title, have a focus on the Vietnam War, and be developed using the Modern Warfare engine.
