As you have probably already seen, earlier this year it was announced that a TV series based on The Last of Us was in the works at HBO with writers Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin jumping on board the project. With very little news to go on since, the showrunner and writer for the upcoming show, Craig Mazin, has given a very small teaser over on Twitter telling excited fans that there will be “modest news” coming “soon enough.”
Correct. There will be some modest TLOU news soon enough. We are hard at work writing and… you know… other stuff. But my 7 days tweet was about a small, approaching change in American governance.
When we can share more about the show, we will! https://t.co/372ZS9Ha7e

In the tweet, Mazin was initially replying to a previous comment where he posted a gif that said “7 days” and with Neil Druckmann liking it, people started to jump to conclusions thinking it was related to The Last of Us TV show and that we’d get some kind of news in seven days but in actual fact, he was referring to Biden’s inauguration. Not wanting to leave it at that, Mazin gave a little hint at some The Last of Us news coming our way. “There will be some modest TLOU news soon enough. We are hard at work writing and… you know… other stuff,” replied Mazin. “But my 7 days tweet was about a small, approaching change in American governance.
Mazin is certainly a busy person right now. Not only has he got HBO’s The Last of Us on his plate, but he also is currently at work writing Eli Roth’s Borderlands movie, which is due to begin shooting this year, as well as a yet unnamed Pirates of the Caribbean project which is currently in the early stage of filming. As of now, there’s no telling what this “modest news” could be, but I am hoping that maybe it could be casting news for the HBO adaptation as TLOU community has been going wild with their ideas on who could play what part. As for the show’s plot, it is said to center entirely around the first installment of The Last of Us, which follows Joel and Ellie in the trek across the United States.
As we saw last year, Craig Mazin gave fans a few tidbits during an interview with the BBC, where he also indulged in some additional information on the development of the show. ”We’re creating new [things] and re-imagining what is already there to present it for a different format,” Mazin told the BBC’s Must Watch. “Our goal is not to keep you in love with The Last of Us, but to make you fall in love with it again in a different way. It’s a passive way of taking it in, instead of playing it, but you’ll be experiencing more, with more characters in more ways.” Mazin also talked about a “Jaw-drop” moment in the very same interview, too.
In a video for Sony’s CES 2021 showcase, PlayStation’s Jim Ryan announced that the upcoming Uncharted movie and The Last of Us TV show are “just the beginning.” Ryan stated that Uncharted and The Last of Us, “is just the beginning of the expansion of our storytelling into new media and even wider audiences.”
If for some reason you haven’t played The Last of Us and want to see what you’re in for ahead of the HBO show, The Last of Us is available on the PS4 or you could jump straight into The Last of Us Part 2 which is available exclusively on PS4 (and soon to be PS5). Although my advice would be to play the first one before you play the second. You can pick Part 2 up physically on Amazon to help support the site.
