In a video for Sony’s CES 2021 showcase, PlayStation’s Jim Ryan says the upcoming Uncharted movie and The Last of Us TV show are “just the beginning.”
“We’re also really thrilled to bring some of the best PlayStation IP to new media like film and television,” said Ryan. “You’ll see this year the upcoming Tom Holland film Uncharted, based on our iconic adventure games. And The Last of Us, a gritty, emotional journey, will be coming to HBO. This is just the beginning of the expansion of our storytelling into new media and even wider audiences.”
After years of numerous delays, a movie of adaptation of Uncharted is releasing this year starring Tom Holland. The movie wrapped filming in October 2020 and Mark Wahlberg teased his role as Sully. More recently, new images have been released showing off several artifacts.

As for HBO’s The Last of Us series, its development was announced in March 2020 with Chernobyl‘s Craig Mazin set to write and produce the show. Mazin will be joined by Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann as a writer and producer. The show was greenlit last November with production starting soon. Chernobyl‘s Johan Beck has said he’ll direct at least one episode of the series. Additionally, Last of Us composer Gustavo Santaolalla will return to compose the score.
In 2019, Sony Interactive Entertainment formed PlayStation Productions, a studio dedicated to adapting PlayStation titles to films and television shows. The studio will be run by Asad Qizilbash, SIE’s Vice President of marketing. As reported by VG247 last December, Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra said seven films and three shows based on PlayStation franchises are in development.
Uncharted releases on July 16, 2021 in theaters. It stars Tom Holland as Nathan Drake and is directed by Zombieland‘s Ruben Fleischer. Currently, there’s no release date for The Last of Us on HBO. Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin will be the showrunner for the series.
