Nintendo in recent years has been known for having a mainline directs sometime during January and while we have nothing right now to assume that the company will follow suit this year, it seems that people are making attempts to raise speculation.

A user by the name of Gothalion on Twitter posted a screenshot of a document outlining a Nintendo Direct set for January 11th. According to another user on the platform, the document originally leaked on Reddit followed by quickly being deleted. Listed for what is coming for this supposed direct include unannounced first-party titles like a sequel to Super Mario Odyssey, a new Metroid title, and more. It also outlines unannounced third-party titles like a new Kingdom Hearts game called Kingdom Hearts: Destiny’s Embrace.
These unheard-of projects aren’t what make this document seem fake, but the inclusion of release windows for each major game listed raises multiple red flags. Kingdom Hearts, for example, has already been confirmed by Series Creator Tetsuya Nomura that its next series title will release in 2022 at the earliest but is listed with a release window of 2021. Mario Kart 9 and Splatoon 3 are two other games to supposedly be announced to release in the first half of this year, but with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continuously being one of the platform’s best-selling titles and Splatoon 2 still having online events, the idea of new entries seem unlikely. Also, there are simple typos.
Several times now we have seen images of these Nintendo Direct “documents” outline what to expect and every time it has turned out to be fake. I think we’re going to get a Nintendo Direct this month, but don’t get your hopes up based on this.
