At Indie Live Expo 2020 on June 6, Japanese indie studio Gemdrops announced Cogen: Sword of Rewind for 2020 release on PS4, Switch, and PC via Steam. A trailer and screenshots were also shared, you can find them further below.

The game’s full Japanese name is written COGEN:大鳥こはくと刻の剣 / Cogen: Ootori Kohaku to Toki no Ken, which translates to Cogen: Kohaku Ootori and the Sword of Time. Kohaku Ootori being the name of the female protagonist. The official English title, Cogen: Sword of Rewind, is simpler.

Cogen is a stylish action game, with Kohaku being able to slightly turn back time by using her sword and a mechanic titled the Ouroboros System. It’s very inspired from the games of Inti Creates: Rockman Zero and Azure Striker Gunvolt. Zero on GBA could slash cancel projectiles, Kohaku can slash them back at enemies with her sword.

One of the biggest appeals of Cogen: Sword of Rewind is its music, composed by Motoi Sakuraba, the man who’d probably bring his synthesizer to a police violence protest. You can clearly recognize his style in the trailer.

Gemdrops is a studio that also makes VR games, and is the studio behind the Spice and Wolf interactive VR experiences.

Gemdrops together with FuRyu also co-developed action JRPG Crystar on PS4 and Steam.

More details on Cogen: Sword of Rewind will be published via the game’s official site and via Gemdrops’ official Twitter account.

Personally speaking, Cogen: Ootori Kohaku to Toki no Ken looks amazing and it’s incredible to hear it’s scheduled to launch this year. Gemdrops must be working on this for a long while now. Kohaku’s outfit mixing knight and gothloli aesthetics is super cool. I wanna try this now.

We’ll be publishing soon an article with all the announcements from Indie Live Expo 2020, so stay tuned like Ulala would say.
