It is no secret that WWE 2K20 was not up to snuff, even compared to its previous entries. However, it seems the game’s quality has definitely affected its expectations, both in sales and quality.
During Take-Two Interactive’s third-quarter earnings call, Executive Chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick discussed WWE 2K20‘s performance and their plans for the series. The most recent iteration did not meet its expectations, which can be a result of its poor critical reception and general quality. Despite that, there are plans to grow the WWE 2K series, as well as address the issues the series now currently has for future installments.
“While we’re disappointed that WWE 2K20 did not meet our expectations, both in terms of sales and quality, 2K is actively working with Visual Concepts to ensure that these issues are addressed in the future, and they’ll have more to share on their plans soon,” says Zelnick. “The WWE brand continues to expand worldwide, and there remains a substantial long-term opportunity to grow our WWE 2K series by improving the quality of the game.”
WWE 2K20‘s disappointing sales numbers seem to have affected the WWE itself as well. In the company’s fourth-quarter 2019 report, WWE saw a decrease in revenue from $32.8 million to $30.8 million specifically siting lower video game royalties as the primary cause of the drop.
Personally, I really hope we see an improvement with the inevitable WWE 2K21 or 2K22. The last entry was the first Visual Concepts developed without the aid of Yuke’s, who has worked on various wrestling games since the mid-90s. From talking to WWE 2K20 Creative Director Lynell Jinks, that separation didn’t seem mutual, which could have attributed to the problems of WWE 2K20. It may take a couple of games to really satisfy, but with speaking with the team, they definitely know wrestling and they know the kind of game they want to make. I just hope they can appease everyone soon.
WWE 2K20 is available now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The most recent DLC Update, which is based on Southpaw Regional Wrestling, just released today (February 7, 2020).
