There was a pretty interesting surprise announcement recently, a brand new game called I Am Jesus Christ. This title is based on the New Testament of the Christian Bible and has a reveal trailer showing off gameplay and story. From what we see, the player travels around as the titular protagonist and performs various miracles that are featured in the Bible:
As you can see, there’s a special log book that takes a snapshot of said miracle and underneath quotes the passage from the Bible that it relates to. There’s also a meter on the lower right-hand side of the screen, which is clearly related to the performed miracles since it drains every time Jesus uses his powers.
The last scenes in the trailer first depict his eventual crucifixion on the cross, and then his resurrection three days later. The featured image on the trailer itself, meanwhile, depicts his last supper with his disciples.
While no official release date has been announced at this time, we do know it will be coming to Steam as it already has its own Steam page here. Also on the page are some screenshots that reveal a few more miracles, as well as an exorcism and a fight with Satan himself in the desert:
While religious themed games are old hat in the industry, the more popular titles tend to either show Christianity in a tongue-in-cheek manner — like the marriage scene in Days Gone — or in a more negative light such as the in Shin Megami Tensei franchise.
So for variety’s sake, it’s unique to see gameplay of the famous events completely straight. And judging from the reactions of gamers since the trailer reveal, at the very least it garnered plenty of interest. Now whether that interest carries over into actual sales is another question.
