Sega released a batch of new screenshots of Sonic Forces, focusing on the custom character that players can create, and on the newly released Drill Wispon that will appear in the game.
DualShockers actually saw the Drill Wispon and the Chemical Plant level showcased in the screenshots played live at a press event at Sega’s development headquarters in Tokyo. Below you can find some more details shared by the development team to complement the gameplay.
Wispon are basically a mix between weapon and gadgets used by the anti-Eggman resistance, and specifically by the player-created hero. They are an evolution of the Color Powers from Sonic Colors can harness the power of the wisps to create various effects.
The wispon showcased so far were the Burst Wispon, the Lighting Wispon, and the Cube Wispon. Today we see the Drill Wispon.
The Burst Wispon acts basically as a flamethrower. The Lighting Wispon can generate an electric whip. The Cube Wispon freezes the enemies allowing the player to destroy them with a second hit (dropping more rings).
For the first time we see the Drill Wispon in action: it can be charged up and then our hero will burst through the enemies in front of him (or her) at super-high speed with a powerful drill punch.
Interestingly, using different wispon also changes the difficulty of the game. The Cube Wispon has been designed as a sort of easy mode to let newer players enjoy the game with a lower level of challenge. The Drill Wispon is the hardest to master, but can be the most powerful once you really know how to use it.
Different wispon also have different traversal abilities. For instance the Burst Wispon acts as a sort of rocket jump, propelling our hero upwards at an angle. The Lightning Wispon enables an ability similar to Sonic’s Light Speed Dash (or Light Dash), allowing our hero to use connected rings as a path to dash through the air like he was a lightning bolt. It actually takes the concept further, by allowing us to use not only the rings, but also enemies to chain long combos.
The new Drill Wispon lets the character drill dash into the ground to quickly traverse levels, and climb walls.
Using different wispon on the same level will allow the player to find different paths, secrets and collectibles, enhancing replayability.
Notably, we also see some concept art of the hideout that will serve a home base of the resistance.
