Developer Picorinne Soft is a one-man Japanese studio who is teaming up with publisher DANGEN Entertainment to release Disc Creatures. The game is a tribute to monster catching Game Boy RPGs like Pokemon and looks right out of that era. Check out the announcement trailer below:

As you can see, Disc Creatures looks just like a Pokemon game for the Game Boy Color and, in a lot of ways, that’s exactly what you’re getting. Similarly to Pokemon, there are 200 creatures for you to collect and battle during your adventure. The sprite work and chiptune music feel right out of that era as well. This package will surely send 90s kids on a nostalgia kick.

That said, there are a few differences between Disc Creatures and Pokemon. The most noticeable is that you’ll be controlling three creatures in battle instead of just one. This gives you a number of different ways to combo abilities and opens up the battles in ways that weren’t possible in original Pokemon adventures.

Each creature also has its own unique skill tree. As you level, you’re not just gaining new abilities in a line. Instead, you’re making decisions about which skills to pursue in your creature’s skill tree. Further, when you gain new abilities, you don’t lose the old ones like in Pokemon. This lets you mix-and-match your creatures skill set before every battle, greatly increasing the variability in playstyles.

It’s cool to see a game like this coming out. For as successful as Pokemon was in the Game Boy days, there weren’t that many imitators until later on. Having a game like Disc Creatures play with that art style should be incredibly interesting, at the very least.

Look for Disc Creatures on PC later this year.
