While Resident Evil 2 remake may be slowly leaving the horror meta, one fandom still remains: Mr. X. He has become a talking point, whether we are talking about our unbridled love of the character or some of the more sultry mods, he is the Capcom superstar that this generation deserves. And while the fandom around his character caught most of us off-guard, it truly shocked the Resident Evil 2 remake development team.

That news comes by way of Resident Evil 2‘s Director, Kazunori Kadoi. Speaking with publication PC Gamer in a quick Mr. X-based interview, Kadoi-san said just that: “we had no idea that people would enjoy Tyrant to this degree.”

Specifically speaking about the DMX mod that swaps out X Gon’ Give It To Ya for his iconic footsteps, Kadoi-san mentioned that it makes the development team really happy to see these fan-projects.

“It’s always unpredictable what will truly resonate with fans no matter how much you aim for something particular, but it’s always a pleasant surprise when fans walk away from a game with a positive experience and have something to share with their peers.”

Outside of discussing the love of Mr. X, Kadoi-san offered some interesting glimpses into the character–including squashing a popular fan theory. Given Tyrant’s near-omnipotence and the fact that he interacts with both Leon and Claire simultaneously, many within the community had guessed that there are actually multiple Mr. X’s in Raccoon City. And while that theory has some sound logic backing it, it simply isn’t true: “There’s only one Tyrant.”

According to Kadoi-san, “You could say that each scenario could be considered a parallel world, which is why you see Tyrant appear multiple times.” So, no. Sorry Resident Evil 2 conspiracy theorists.

Aside from fun trivia points, Kadoi-san also dived into the mechanics of building out Mr. X for Resident Evil 2 remake, which included re-working his AI from the original release. According to him, the original PS1 version of the game had a few scripted scenes where Tyrant would be bursting through the walls. The remakes version of Mr. X is far more menacing:

“Tyrant will track you down regardless of being rooms apart from each other, so the fundamental components of his AI are vastly different.”

Even more horrifying, if Tyrant can’t find a player quick enough, his ability to hear the player strengthens… creating an even more deadly beast to handle.

The Resident Evil 2 remake team at Capcom has a lot to be happy about — it was recently revealed that the game has shipped over 4 million copies, which is a staggering figure for the famed series. We loved our time with the game, awarding it a 9.0 out of 10 in the DualShockers review.

Resident Evil 2 remake is available now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. If you have yet to (re)experience the terrors of Raccoon City, you can pick up the game on Amazon right now.
