The most interesting multimedia project on Nintendo’s docket currently is the Super Mario Bros. movie that is being made with the help of Illumination Entertainment. While, both parties involved have previously been quite vague about when exactly the animated movie will hit theaters, Nintendo revealed in their financial results briefing that the movie is being pegged for a 2022 release.
Specifically, Nintendo reveals on page 16 of the briefing that “the development of animated film based on ‘Super Mario Bros.‘ with Illumination is moving along for an anticipated theatrical release around 2022.” While Nintendo saying “around 2022” does mean that the date might be subject to change, both them and Illumination Entertainment seem pretty confident in their partnership and the development of the Super Mario Bros. movie.
In case you don’t know who Illumination Entertainment is, it is the animation studio behind films like Despicable Me, Minions, Sing, and The Grinch. One of the studio’s Co-Founders is Chris Meledandri and he has previously talked about the Super Mario Bros. movie with Variety.
While he still won’t tell us much about what to actually expect from the actual story, he did voice the fact that he was relieved that the terrible Super Mario Bros. movie exists. “I like that this was not done well the first time,” he said. “I think that’s more exciting or more worthy than simply making another version of a film that was done incredibly well to begin with.”
As you are all probably aware of, video game movies don’t have a good track record. At all. Still, Illumination Entertainment’s Super Mario Bros. movie seems to be attempting to buck that trend by keeping Shigeru Miyamoto heavily involved in the creative process. Chris Meledandri has gone as far to say that he’s “rarely seen that happen with any adaptation where the original creative voice is being embraced like we’re embracing Miyamoto.” Hopefully, this means we’ll actually have a good video game movie to look forward to in 2022.
While it’s still about three years out, you can still expect DualShockers to let tell you more about this movie as new information about it comes out. In the meantime, you should play some Super Mario Bros. games. Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe released last month for 3DS and Wii U, respectively.
