Today, Sea of Thieves is rolling out its fourth free content update, Shrouded Spoils, bringing a ton of new features to Rare’s pirate game.

One such feature is the implementation of fog. This will make sailing the seas a bit more difficult as your view is obscured not knowing what hazards await. It could just be a few rocks to avoid or a nasty skeleton crew out ready for battle.

Speaking of skeleton crews, Shrouded Spoils will bring six Skeleton Forts waiting to be raided. Successfully taking out the army of the undead will reward you with Ancient Bone Dust, a new resource that will earn you more reputation with the Merchant Alliance, one of the three Trading Companies in the game. Additionally, new Skeleton Sloops will be making their way to Sea of Thieves.

Cursed Mermaid Statues will be back with the Shrouded Spoils update. Destroying the statues will grant you a magic-infused gemstone that is accepted by all three Trading Companies.

Some of the Sea of Thieves‘ monstrous creatures will be getting an overhaul for the new update. More Megalodons will be skulking about the vast oceans while Krakens have found new techniques to attack any unexpecting explorers. Defeating these creatures will get you some loot.

Lastly, more ship customization options will be available. This includes the Wailing Barnacle cosmetics which will be available for a limited time.

Sea of  Thieves is the latest release from Rare, makers of favorites such as Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong Country. Released back in March of this year, the British developer has been keeping things fresh for its pirate adventure game by consistently releasing free content updates. Forsaken Shores — the last named update to release — added the volcanic Devil’s Roar region and rowboats.

If you want to see I thought of Sea of Thieves at launch, you can check out my review where I said, “There is enjoyment to be found in Sea of Thieves, but not enough to keep you interested in the long term.” With the release of these content updates, maybe I should take another look at this seafaring adventure.
