Nintendo announced their neat little NES controllers for Nintendo Switch in a Direct presentation a couple of months ago. Intended for use in the Nintendo Entertainment System—Nintendo Switch Online service, a name that hurts every time I type it, the controllers were promised for release on mid-December for subscribers to the Switch’s online service. Nintendo appears to be keeping that promise, opening up the floodgates for pre-purchase.
These controllers will provide players with the means to experience those NES games “the way they’re meant to be played.” It’s worth reminding, however, that these controllers will only work separately, and even though they attach to the Switch console to charge, you cannot use them for play in handheld mode. That just wouldn’t make sense now, would it?
Meanwhile, the NES game online service has silently gained new titles over the past couple of months since its launch. The line-up gained NES Open Tournament Golf, Solomon’s Key, and Super Dodge Ball in October, along with a special version of The Legend of Zelda, with Metroid, Mighty Bomb Jack, and TwinBee planned for this month of November and Wario’s Woods, Ninja Gaiden, and Adventures of Lolo in December.
These fun-looking controllers look like they’ll arrive just in time for the holiday season. Be sure to read our thoughts on the potential of the NES service, and subscribers to Nintendo Switch Online can pre-purchase the controllers on Nintendo’s website for $59.99.
