God of War‘s update 1.01 implemented two different visual models on PS4 Pro, aptly named “favor resolution” and “favor performance.”
The modes are a bit hidden since they can be found in the camera settings menu, but you can see what they look like below.
“Favor resolution” renders the game at 2160p checkerboard, while “favor performance” renders the game at 1080p, sacrificing a bit of detail in favor of higher frame rate. To be precise, it seems to hold a frame rate higher than 30 FPS, but not quite 60 in most areas. On a 1080p screens “Favor Resolution” enables supersampling in order to show a higher level of detail.
That being said, if you’re wondering about the visual tradeoff, we took quite a few screenshots in the game, aiming to showcase the difference. In each of the pair of screenshots below (shot on a 1080p screen and saved in lossless PNG to preserve as much detail as possible) you can see “Favor performance” first, and “Favor resolution” second.
While the difference isn’t enormous, it’s certainly noticeable in foliage, fur, Kratos’ beard, the level of detail on wood and rocks, terrain, and more.
That being said, one thing is for sure: the game looks absolutely beautiful in both modes. If you prefer higher frame rate, you’re not sacrificing all that much in terms of visuals. This is certainly a testament to the fantastic level of detail the good folks at Sony Santa Monica have poured into the game.

You’re still in time to pre-order the game, which releases on April 20th exclusively on PS4. You can do so on Amazon.
