After an initial name change courtesy of an Iron Maiden lawsuit, 3D Realms released Ion Fury, their throwback FPS. The game did decently well critically on release. Many reviewers praised how well the team utilized the old Build engine, an engine that hadn’t been used for development in 20 years. The arcade shooter is now hoping to find an even bigger audience when it launches on consoles next month. Give the announcement trailer a watch below.
The game is, without question, an excellent throwback to the days of Duke Nukem 3D. Obviously, this isn’t the same 3D Realms as the one that dominated the shooter market in the 90s; however, it’s great to see them back in that space as a publisher. And, seeing the Build engine used with such style is incredibly cool. The engine hasn’t been used since World War II GI in 1999, but Ion Fury proves that you can still make quality shooter campaigns with the old girl.
Of course, developer Voidpoint didn’t just make a 90s shooter, they added in tons of modern features that simply weren’t possible back in the day. Players can expect to enjoy conveniences like auto-saves, headshots, and controller support, alongside many other quality-of-life updates. It really does sound like the best of both worlds. You get to enjoy that classic gameplay without dealing with some of the old-school peskiness of game development.
Ion Fury comes to Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One on May 14. At launch, the game will only be available digitally. However, the team is putting out a physical release on June 26. If you can’t wait, the game is available now on PC. Either way, expect to get a classic shooter with great movement, awesome level design, and fun weapons that keep the good times rolling.
