Niantic will be updating Pokemon Go so that players can now switch sides and change their team from Team Instinct, Mystic, or Valor to whatever they want.

However, this comes with the caveat that you are only able to switch teams once a year. Meaning if you mess up on your change you have to wait a whole 365 days before being able to correct your mistake.

This feature will become available starting on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at 1:00 PM PST. This feature is available thanks to an in-game item called the Team Medallion which can be purchased for 1,000 PokeCoins (~$10 USD) once every year.

Any of your Pokémon in Gyms at the time you change teams will be returned with no earned PokéCoins once they’re defeated. You’ll also be unable to battle your own Pokémon, so if you return to a Gym that has your Pokémon defending it, your Pokémon will be returned to you with no earned PokéCoins.

In additional news, Latias has returned for Raid Battles from February 22-25, 2019 and includes the opportunity to encounter a shiny version.

Pokemon Go has received steady updates since its initial release in July of 2016. Since then a steady stream of updates have introduced newer generations of Pokemon to the game beyond Generation 1. Niantic promised PvP in 2018 and were just barely able to deliver with Trainer Battles launching in late December 2018. The most recent major addition has been a Snapshot mode that allows you to easily take photos of Pokemon in the real world. Niantic’s gigantic hit continues to be a major money-maker as well, having earned $80.8 million for The Pokemon Company during their fiscal year 2017 period. Late last year Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee were released with some Go integration that allowed you to trade Pokemon one way and evolve Meltan into Melmetal by feeding it Meltan candy.
