The lineup of big releases for this spring has spread through a lot of different genres, from intense action games like Resident Evil 3 and Half-Life: Alyx, to platformers like Ori and the Will of the Wisps, to sprawling RPGs like Final Fantasy VII Remake and Persona 5 Royal. However, this week seems to be the time for strategy games to shine, as not one but two major strategy games have arrived next to each other: XCOM: Chimera Squad and Gears Tactics. Now the real question is: which one should you play?
To dive into the conversation a little deeper, DualShockers‘ Ryan Meitzler (Features Editor) and Kris Cornelisse (Staff Writer) discussed XCOM: Chimera Squad and Gears Tactics to see how the two XCOM-like games compared and contrasted. With Chimera Squad being an actual XCOM game and Gears Tactics drawing heavy inspiration from the beloved strategy game series, both offer some fresh takes on familiar franchises.
During the course of our video discussion, we each brought our own insights into how both titles incorporate key features from the XCOM and Gears series in new ways. Kris noted that Chimera Squad takes many of the core elements from XCOM 2 and reinvents them to fit a smaller scale, making for a more personal strategy experience. Meanwhile, Ryan breaks down how Gears Tactics reinvents many of the elements of Gears of War and adapts them into a completely new setting for a strategy game.
For a closer look at our thoughts on both games and how they compare, you can watch the full discussion video below. You can also read both of our reviews on XCOM: Chimera Squad and Gears Tactics if you want to know more about each game individually. They both happened to score an 8.0/10.0, so either way, you’re sure to get a satisfying strategy game experience.
XCOM: Chimera Squad and Gears Tactics are both available now on PC. Gears Tactics will also be coming to Xbox One at a later date.
