Square Enix and Nintendo announced the six protagonists of Trials of Mana will be added to Super Smash Bros Ultimate‘s Spirit Board for a time limited event.
Players of Smash Ultimate will be able to grab spirits of Riesz and Hawkeye, Duran and Angela, Charlotte and Kevin. The event will go from April 24 to April 29. The protagonists have been paired in a way reflecting how they share the same overall story in Trials of Mana.
Speaking of April 24, this is when Trials of Mana will launch on Steam, PS4 and Switch. Our review is already live.
The illustrations used for the Spirits in Smash Ultimate are the same as the one in the game itself. The illustrations are by HACCAN, the current main character designer of the Mana series, succeeding Shinichi Kameoka. I personally think HACCAN did a great job for all the remakes so far. If you want to hear one of my unneeded opinions, HACCAN’s illustrations were among the only good things about the Secret of Mana 2018 “remake”.

One pretty funny thing I’d also like to note is how none of the Trials of Mana protagonists’ outfits in Smash were modified despite both the boys and girls wearing skimpy outfits. Shows yet again how Mai Shiranui not getting in the SNK stage and Xenoblade 2‘s Hikari getting her costume changed isn’t some conspiracy. It’s just all down to luck and whims of whoever’s making the final call. I’m 100% positive Saitom wasn’t against putting form-fitting tights on Hikari either.
Anyway. The usual reminder in case you didn’t know: Trials of Mana is a remake of Seiken Densetsu 3, released exclusively in Japan on Super Famicom/Snes in 1995. Seiken Densetsu 3 is the follow-up to Seiken Densetsu 2, known as Secret of Mana outside Japan. Seiken Densetsu 3 was officially translated as Trials of Mana and released outside Japan for the first time during E3 2019 via Collection of Mana on Nintendo Switch. The remake is also named Trials of Mana in the west. In Japan, the remake is titled Seiken Densetsu 3 Trials of Mana, to differentiate it from the original game.
Trials of Mana was first announced at E3 2019 along with some live gameplay. You can check out the past trailers, artwork, details, and screenshots here, here, here, here, and here. The most important thing is how this remake has a brand new postgame, Classes, and a New Game +.
