Square Enix announced new sales numbers for the Trials of Mana remake: over one million copies have been shipped or downloaded worldwide. A special illustration by Haccan, the character designer of the remake, was published for the occasion.
It’s important to note the game sold “only” 150,000 copies its first week after release on April 24, 2020. Meaning the sales of Trials of Mana have been rising steadily over the months, thanks to more and more people realizing this is a great remake.
Back in August 2020, Square Enix mentioned the sales of Trials of Mana were much higher than its expectations, and how it was a good sign for the future of the series. It looks like we can raise our hopes even more now. Maybe my dream of Square Enix partnering up with 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim developer Vanillaware for a 2D remake of Legend of Mana isn’t so far-fetched.
The announcement was made via both the Seiken Densetsu Japanese official twitter, and the Mana Series English official twitter.

Original composer Hiroki Kikuta tweeted a message for the occasion:
“Seiken Densetsu 3 Trials of Mana surpassed one million, feels like my long-standing wishes have been granted. Let’s celebrate!”

It’s definitely impressive that Trials of Mana managed to sell over one million, and it deserved it. The original game was pretty good in the first place (except its lagging menus). The remake includes several good ideas. First, both the original and rearranged OST by Hiroki Kikuta are included. Secondly, the incredible character design, illustrations, and 3D models. Thirdly, the new battle system. Lastly, the inclusion of brand new post game content and a New Game + mode. All of these make Trials of Mana a great remake.
However, you can easily tell the game was a small scale project for Square Enix. I personally regret few enhancements were made to the original script. Most notably when it comes to screenplay during cutscenes. Back on Super Nintendo, our imagination could work things out. But now, it feels quite soulless to see the characters just standing there during cutscenes.
Trials of Mana Final Trailer
Trials of Mana launched on April 24, 2020, on PS4, PC. and Switch. This is a remake of Seiken Densetsu 3, released in Japan on Super Famicom/SNES in 1995. Seiken Densetsu 3 is the follow-up to Seiken Densetsu 2, known and beloved worldwide as Secret of Mana.
Seiken Densetsu 3 was officially translated and released outside Japan for the first time during E3 2019 via Collection of Mana on Switch, and it was titled Trials of Mana. The remake’s name is identical, so it can be a bit confusing.
The Japanese version of the remake is titled Seiken Densetsu 3 Trials of Mana to differentiate it from the original game.
