The last year of the decade has been riddled with The Witcher news due to not only The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt launching as a complete edition on the Nintendo Switch, but Netflix’s live-action take on the show launched on the streaming platform too. We’ve also seen The Witcher 3 land on Xbox Game Pass roughly around the same time as the show hit Netflix, so there’s not really been a moment to breathe without inhaling some form of Geralt of Rivera.
On December 20, The Witcher landed on Netflix as a live-action show with Henry Cavill playing the protagonist. The release seems to have created a surge in popularity once again as the game has been rising the charts on Steam.
On Twitter, video game industry analyst Benji-Sales reported that on December 23, CD Projekt RED’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt had hit a total concurrent player count of over 50,000 players on Steam.
According to Steam Charts, the game when it launched back in May 2015 is shown to have hit over 90,000 concurrent players. Since then the last noticeable spike in players was May and June 2016 when the final DLC, Blood and Wine launched.
The charts have remained in the 20,000-30,000 area after that surge until December 22, 2019, when the peak started growing. By December 26 there were over 70,000 concurrent players jumping on the Steam version of the game. The player count across all available platforms is also anticipated to be much higher.
Additionally, Benji-Sales reported that in the US, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt had become the third best-selling game on Steam, sitting beneath Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Jedi: Fallen Order

With the show already being approved for a second series, it’ll be interesting to see if the concurrent player count rises again once it launches on Netflix. We’ve been waffling about the show over the past week or so here at DualShockers, and to add to that we even have a review. Also, as a side note, I’d love to see Netflix take on the developer’s upcoming Cyberpunk 2077.
