Over the past month or so, there has been a lot of pushback on The Last of Us Part II following the leaks for the project. Some who have spoiled themselves of the game’s story have seemingly been disappointed, and as a result, have voiced that they will no longer be buying the game. Others have remained optimistic and excited for the title, still saying that they’ll be there to purchase it on day one. Despite the back and forth, The Last of Us Part II still looks like it’s going to sell incredibly well once it releases based on some new info that has come to light.
According to Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO, Jim Ryan, The Last of Us Part II is still already seeing some rather impressive pre-order totals. In a new interview with CNET, Ryan stated that in Europe, The Last of Us Part II is already seeing higher pre-order numbers compared to those for Marvel’s Spider-Man in 2018. Considering that Spider-Man ended up being one of the best-selling PS4-exclusive titles ever, and to date has sold over 9 million copies worldwide.
Ryan went on to say that he has high hopes for The Last of Us Part II on a critical front, too, saying, “We hope this’ll be a defining game for this generation.” While it remains to be seen if the sequel will be of the same quality of the original game, Naughty Dog’s track record seems to point to it being quite impressive. Not to mention, what we’ve seen recently of the title in its new State of Play presentation looked pretty stellar.
Considering the original The Last of Us has to date sold over 20 million copies across PS3 and PS4, it shouldn’t come as much of a shock if Part II ends up doing gangbusters, especially with a PS4 install base that is near 110 million units. If past Sony releases are any indication, we should hear within a few weeks after launch on how the game ended up selling in its initial few days following release.
The Last of Us Part II is slated to arrive next month on June 19, exclusively on PS4.
