The iconic Tales Of series turns 25 this year, and today, Bandai Namco released a short celebration video of the series over on Twitter.
Join us in celebrating 📔 Tales of, one of the most iconic Japanese RPG series of all time!

The tweet features a video that gives fans glimpses of all the main mothership titles of the franchise’s history, including those that have never seen an English translation. What will get fans salivating though is Bandia Namco’s mention that of, “We have a lot planned for you to enjoy over the coming months.”
We already know of two titles in development, the mobile Tales of Crestoria and the next main game, Tales of Arise. Both of these have unfortunately suffered delays recently, with Tales of Arise being pushed outside of its initial 2020 release window. Could they have ports or remasters on modern systems planned? Are we getting a new Memoria artbook as we got for the 20th anniversary? We will just have to wait and see as the link in the tweet goes to the standard Bandai Namco webpage.
Tales Of got its start over in Japan with Tales of Phantasia, released on the Super Famicom back in 1995. Focusing on the swordsman, Cress (or Cless) Albane, the first entry saw the debut of the Linear Motion Battle System, which change the perspective during battles to a two-dimensional side-view and let players run up and attack foes with a variety of attacks and special moves, called Artes. This action-oriented battle system would continue to evolve with each new entry, becoming one of the defining features of the series.
The United States wouldn’t get Tales of Phantasia though, with our first foray into the titles coming with the localized release of the second game, Tales of Destiny in 1998. This outing told of the adventures of Stahn Aileron and his crew of friends and sentiment swords known as Swordians, in their quest to save the world. The significant development in the series, especially in terms of recognition in the West, would come in 2004 with Tales of Symphonia on the Nintendo Gamecube. The big marketing push that Nintendo gave Tales of Symphonia put the series in many RPG and anime fans’ headlights, and the rest is history.
With it becoming more and more difficult every year to play the older games of the series, many of which with a high asking price, fans are hoping that these plans may include a collection of remasters of some sort, myself included. I would love the chance to play the games we’ve never gotten before, or get collections of games brought onto the Switch, PS4, and Xbox One. It would make the wait for Tales of Arise far more bearable.
Happy Birthday, Tales Of series, you’re one of the best!
