Super Smash Bros Ultimate – Director Sakurai denies Fighter Pass 3 rumors

At the end of the video, director Sakurai reiterated the next DLC fighter releasing after Kazuya is the last. There will be no extension, no Fighter Pass Vol 3 in Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

Masahiro Sakurai: “Up until now, we’ve created all sorts of fighters and stages. Gathering all of these games, new and old, and compiling them into a single product is a task that has meant a lot to me. Thinking about it, it’s been nearly 10 years since Super Smash Bros. For Wii U and For Nintendo 3DS were in development. I’ve been working on the series for a long time, you could call it my life’s work. But finally, the next fighter will be the last (for Ultimate). There won’t be any more after that. “

He added that his team will keep working through telework for the final DLC character. In March 2020, Sakurai explained how the Covid-19 pandemic affected the DLC fighters’ development.

Masahiro Sakurai: “It’ll be a while before we announce the final character, but it’ll be available this year as planned so please be patient. It seems like the team will keep working on this game through telework until the very end”.

Sakurai first said there would be no Fighters Pass 3 back in February 2020. You can hear Sakurai’s message at the 39:59 timestamp linked below:

Who do you think the final DLC character will be?

Personally, I’m still keen on believing Adol Christin from Nihon Falcom’s Ys JRPG series will be the chosen one. I believe anything’s possible now that the fan translation of the Crossbell games is getting used for an official release. Falcom is celebrating its 40th anniversary too. There are several other arguments I’ve listed in a specific story if you’re interested.

We can also rule out these characters appearing as Mii costumes: Lloyd Irving from Tales of Symphonia, Dragonborn from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Dante from Devil May Cry, and Shantae.

Besides Adol, I’d also love to see one more female character, and I believe Laala, the heroine of TakaraTomy’s PriPara, part of the Pretty Series, would be a good choice as well. Pretty Series is quite unknown outside Japan and Asia. But the original rhythm game PriPara became one of the most popular arcade games of all time in Japan and South Korea when it peaked in 2015-2016. Pretty Series is also celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2021.

In May 2021, Masahiro Sakurai also ended his bi-weekly column in Famitsu Magazine, after 18 years. This is where he had most notably praised Death Stranding and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. He also chatted about Cyberpunk 2077. The final column was also initially mistranslated because of the usual magazine leaks, sparking rumors about how Sakurai was planning to retire, while he never said that.

The fact that the next DLC character is the final character in Ultimate doesn’t necessarily means Sakurai won’t work on the future of the Smash Bros. series either.

The final Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC character will be released before the end of 2021. You can always reach out to me on Twitter @A_iyane07 to share your predictions.
