SteamWorld Quest is a card-based RPG that takes the SteamWorld name and gives it drastically different gameplay than the games before it. The team has explored platform mining with the two Dig games, tactical shootouts with Heist, and even a tower defense game on the DS. It’s great to see a developer take their franchise in so many potentially risky directions and it’s even better when those risks pay off.
The game gives players over 100 different cards to build their deck with. As you traverse through the beautiful hand drawn world, you’ll encounter enemies that will test your deck-building skills. These turn-based battles are quite a bit of fun and give you a chance to really tinker with your loadout, making the best deck for your playstyle.
The SteamWorld franchise has always done a great job of blending fun gameplay, gorgeous art, and an infectious sense of humor. Quest is no different and franchise fans should be more than happy with this release. I have to say that I am very interested to see which genre the team at Image & Form tackles next. Will it be a SteamWorld MMO? Or maybe an RTS? Only time will tell, but for now I’ll enjoy having Quest on a new platform.
SteamWorld Quest: The Hand of Gilgamech is coming to Linux, Mac, and PC on May 31. It is already available on Nintendo Switch if you just can’t wait until the end of the month.
