As we start to near Sony’s next-generation hardware, which will likely be that of the PS5, some fans have wondered about the status of the publisher’s “Big Three” first-party games that are still planned to come to PS4. The three games in question, The Last of Us Part II, Death Stranding, and Ghost of Tsushima, are all expected to come to PS4, but with each game still lacking a release window entirely, some have started to speculate that perhaps they could become PS5 titles instead.
Well, in a new presentation directly from Sony, the company has confirmed that all three of these games will still indeed be coming to the PS4. When talking about the final years of the PS4 and the transition to next-gen, Sony made clear that it has an “outstanding roster of exclusive AAA games still to come” for the PS4. This message, in particular, was stated alongside images of The Last of Us Part II, Ghost of Tsushima, and Death Stranding further showing that Sony is planning to bring all three games to current-generation hardware and not next-gen.
Obviously, this isn’t all that surprising as of now as Sony likely wouldn’t divulge whether or not any of these three titles would be coming to PS5 just yet. In fact, no games across the entirety of the video game industry, first-party or otherwise, have really been confirmed for next-gen except for perhaps titles like Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI which are exceptions due to how far in advance each was revealed.
In my own estimation, I do expect all three of Sony’s highly-anticipated first-party titles to still come to PS4 sooner or later. Each of the three games have been in development for so long for PS4 that to then shift entirely to PS5 wouldn’t make much sense. That said, I wouldn’t be shocked in the slightest if PS5 editions of each game did eventually come about. This would be similar to how The Last of Us first released in 2013 on PS3 but merely a year later in 2014 The Last of Us Remastered then came to PS4. In fact, there has already been teasing that Death Stranding specifically could end up coming to PS5.
We still have a lot left to learn about not only the PS5, but Death Stranding, The Last of Us Part II, and Ghost of Tsushima and hopefully details on each will come to light in the coming months. With Sony deciding to skip out on E3 2019 though, it could be awhile before we hear further plans of when each game might finally be landing on PS4.
