The Scribblenauts series was initially created by developer 5th Cell and rose to popularity on the Nintendo DS after the first title released in 2009. The series continued to get new entries for the next few years, but there hasn’t been a new Scribblenauts title since Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure in 2013, as developer 5th Cell ran into financial troubles after a Scribblenauts title was canceled.
Fortunately, Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment announced today that the series will be revived with this year with Scribblenauts Showdown. Developed by Shiver Entertainment, the title adds new versus minigames and a Showdown mode and is set to come out on PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on March 9, 2018.
Steven Chiang, Executive Vice President of Production at Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, had the following to say about Scribblenauts Showdown:
“Scribblenauts Showdown delivers imaginative fun and the humour that Scribblenauts fans love with new social elements to challenge friends and family. Players of all skill levels will enjoy testing their creativity in the fast-paced, head-to-head party style gameplay.”
Scribblenauts Showdown will retain the series’ sandbox mode, which allows up to two players solve puzzles across eight levels with any object they can think of and summon. The game also keeps the series classic art style and will allow players to customize how their character looks.
The game also includes a Versus mode, which contains over 25 two-player minigames. All of the minigames will also be available in single-player and can be set to endlessly shuffle so players can have a constant stream of non-stop minigames to partake in when playing with friends.
The most prominent new feature of Scribblenauts Showdown is the titular Showdown mode, which is a board game style mode that has players compete in a variety of different minigames. The two types of minigames highlighted alongside the game’s reveal are Wordy and Speedy.
Wordy minigames require players to outsmart their opponent by creating the best objects to trump whatever the other player is using; this is mode highlighted in the reveal trailer. Meanwhile, Speedy minigames have players compete to complete challenges as fast as they can with Scribblenauts Showdown’s large dictionary of usable words.
