Sakura Wars, the newest entry in the legendary series by Sega, is currently a PS4 exclusive: Switch, PC, and Xbox players are out of luck now, but Sakura Wars releasing on other platforms isn’t ruled out.
DualShockers recently had the opportunity to interview part of the Sakura Wars development team at Sega, including Director Tetsuya Ootsubo. Compared to Producer Tetsu Katano, who appears on every Sakura Taisen stream, Director Tetsuya Ootsubo has been more elusive since Sakura Wars was first announced. So this interview was a great honor. (Be sure to check our summaries of all the streams so far.)
In particular, we asked Director Ootsubo if Sakura Wars could be coming to other platforms. Here’s his answer:
Tetsuya Ootsubo: “We certainly want as many people as possible to be able to enjoy the Sakura Wars series. We’re actively researching where the most demand exists for the games and weighing what steps we can take to make other options a reality.”
Sega has been regularly releasing more of its PS4 games on PC and/or Switch recently. When an exclusive release happens, it means Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo paid for an exclusive and/or funded the game’s development. Everything is about money.
Next, exclusives nowadays tend to be one-year long, such as Final Fantasy VII Remake. And in Sega’s case you can clearly see that as well. As you already know, Catherine: Full Body is now available on Nintendo Switch. The game was first released on February 14 on PS4 (and PS Vita) and then announced for Switch one year later in March 2020, with ratings appearing in February 2020.
With that in mind, I wouldn’t be surprised if Sakura Wars was announced for Switch or on other platforms in December 2020, one year after its release in Japan.
Be sure to check out our review of Sakura Wars, and why did the game was titled “Sakura Wars” in the west. You can also check our summary of the latest stream, including how a sequel was hinted.
Our full interview with the Sakura Wars development team is coming later this week.
