Square Enix announced Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe will be launching globally on June 25 (PT). For the occasion, the Japanese company published a video message from the SaGa series staff, including SaGa Series Director Akitoshi Kawazu.
In the interview, Akitoshi Kawazu first explained how the first SaGa game launched over 30 years ago on Game Boy. Overall, the SaGa series has been a huge contribution to the RPG genre, bringing forth multiple original game mechanics. Unlike Final Fantasy, it most notably pushed systems not directly inspired from popular western RPGs such as Wizardry.
Next up in the interview was Seizan Shimazaki, the Creative Producer and Technical Director of Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe. He most notably explained how the mobile game mixes HD backgrounds with old-school pixel art, and includes over 100 BGMs, including new tracks, remixes and rearrangements of famous BGM of the series by Kenji Ito.
The last person appearing in the interview was SaGa Series Producer Masanori Ichikawa. He explained how Re;univerSe was specifically designed to avoid pushing players to the gacha. Yes, even in Japan. And how players can reach the main story’s ending without worrying about that.
Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe Creators Official Interview
Re;univerSe is set in the world of Romancing SaGa 3 as the The Rise of Morastrum, a devastating event threatening all life, is about to occur again. However, the game also features characters from Romancing SaGa 1 and 2. Along with brand new original characters.
Re;univerSe is the first non-console SaGa game we’re getting in the west and it follows Emperors SaGa, Imperial SaGa and Imperial SaGa: Eclipse. The game launched in December 2018 in Japan.
Personally, after rediscovering the SaGa series with the remasters of Romancing Saga 2 and 3, I’m particularly eager to see how Re;univerSe will fare, and I definitely hope success will follow. The SaGa series deserves more.
Re;univerSe launches later this week on June 25. Pre-orders are open on Android and iOS.
Romancing Saga 2 and 3 are available on ever platforms. Another SaGa games, SaGa Scarlet Grace: Ambitions, is also available on PS4, Switch, PC, and Mobile.
