The release of Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 remake is right around the corner. With the recently released “1-Shot” demo, players got their first glimpse of the modernized version. However, the timed demo was not the only thing they got their hands on — data miners have dived into the demo’s code, revealing new modes and developments for the classic horror game.

According to a leak from ResetEra user Noodle, a number of unannounced features are listed. Just by opening the Steam demo’s EXE in a HEX editor, you can view all of the information for yourself.
The first bit of information listed pertains to the different modes in Resident Evil 2. Although we’ve known that we would play as either Leon S. Kennedy or Claire Redfield at least in one playthrough, it seems they have brought back the B scenarios from the previous games. There is also mention of the previously revealed Ada Wong but you may just control her during Leon’s scenario. Lastly, it seems that the “4th survivor” and “To-fu survivor” scenarios will be back as they are also listed.
Additionally, there are references to a mode called “Rogue.” While it is uncertain what this mode actually is, it mentions certain variables like enemy kills, results screens, and a shop. It could also just be the stat tracker for RE.net.
There is also information about map areas, weapons, and bosses. However, some of the most interesting information comes from the character information from these files who may have unique characteristics apart from other NPCs in the game.
The first is Chris Redfield, a staple character for the Resident Evil franchise but one that is not in Resident Evil 2 in the traditional sense. The second is Ethan Winters, the protagonist from the last entry in the series, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. It will be interesting if the latter is actually in the game and how he exactly fits into this scenario considering it is before the events of that game.
Like all leaked information that may seem exciting, I would temper your expectations. Some of this could be leftover files that were cut during development. We will know for sure when the Resident Evil 2 remake releases for Xbox One, PS4, and PC on January 25, 2019. You can pre-order the game now on Amazon, or get a taste of the game early by playing the recently-released demo.
