UPDATE: Bloober Team and co. have confirmed that Layers of Fear: Legacy will include both the base game, as well as the expansion, Layers of Fear: Inheritance.
Further, the Switch version is said to have been “rebuilt” for the console, and will include HD Rumble, motion control, and touchscreen control support.
Orignal Story: Polish developer Bloober Team and publisher Aspyr Media have announced that the former’s psychological horror game, Layers of Fear, is coming “soon” to Nintendo Switch as Layers of Fear: Legacy.
For those that don’t know: Layers of Fear released back in February 2016 for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, Mac, and Linux. Upon release it garnered a score ranging from 72 to 78 on Metcritic, depending on the platform. Meanwhile from more of the user side of things, it cultivated a “Very Positive” Steam User Review Rating, with 92 percent of 5,990 users reviewing it positively.
Further, it accumulated a hardcore following, including some of my own friends and colleagues — self-proclaimed huge horror fans — who have raged that it is one of the best horror games this generation.
According to Bloober Team itself, Layers of Fear is a first-person psychedelic horror game with a heavy focus on story and exploration. In it, you delve deep into the mind of an insane painter, and discover the secret of his madness, as you walk through a vast and constantly changing 19th century Victorian-era mansion. Uncovering the visions, fear, and horrors that entwine the painter, your goal is to finish his last masterpiece he has strived to create for so long.
A description of the game adds:
You take another drink as the canvas looms in front of you. A light flickers dimly in the corner. You’ve created countless pieces of art, but never anything like…this. Why haven’t you done this before? It seems so obvious in retrospect. Your friends, critics, business partners—soon, they’ll all see. But something’s still missing…
You look up, startled. That melody… Was that a piano? It sounded just like her… But, no—that would be impossible. She’s gone. They’re all gone.
Have to focus. How long has it taken to get to this point? Too long, but it doesn’t matter. There will be no more distractions. It’s almost finished. You can feel it. Your creation. Your Magnum Opus.
It’s currently unclear if Layers of Fear: Legacy includes any new content, or whether or not it includes the game’s Inheritance DLC (it likely does). What we do know is that Aspyr will be publishing the game physically in select regions and of course digitally via the eShop. Further, it will be playable for the first time at the Tokyo Game Show this week.
Below, you can check out a new trailer, which accompanied the announcement.
In other recent and related news, the aforementioned Bloober Team just released its newest game, another psychological horror game, dubbed Observer, which trades 19th century Victorian for cyberpunk. And in my own personal opinion — it is quite good.
