New Pokémon and living lugnut Meltan has caused a stir in the community, both for its debut in the non-mainline mobile game Pokémon GO and Switch titles Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu! and Eevee! and for its curious character design. Unexpectedly, The Pokémon Company and Nintendo unveiled an evolution for the Mythical Pokémon, with Meltan evolving into Melmetal.
What makes the reveal even more surprising is that Mythical Pokémon were not known to evolve until this point. With a height of 2.5 meters and weighing at 1,763.7 pounds, this Steel-type Pokémon is a comically big one. If you thought, for whatever reason, that the design of Meltan was uninspiring, here’s Melmetal to intimidate the heck out of you.
In the Pokémon lore, Melmetal is said to have been worshipped 3,000 years ago, with the ability to create metal at their will. The creature has the unique move called Double Iron Bash, which can also double strike opponents in battle.
Meltan can evolve into Melmetal in Pokémon GO by using 400 Meltan Candies—these Candies are obtained by catching Meltan in GO through a Mystery Box, either sending Meltan to Professor Willow or by having Meltan as a Buddy Pokémon, or by sending Meltan to Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu! or Eevee! Upon evolving their Meltan to Melmetal, players can then send their Melmetal from the mobile game to the Switch game.
Check out some screenshots of Melmetal in action below—Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu! and Eevee! will release for Nintendo Switch on November 16, and either title can be pre-ordered through Amazon.
