With the acquisition of many studios around the games industry over the past year or two, it stands to reason that Microsoft has quite a number of first-party games cooking at the moment. Now, in a new interview, Xbox head Phil Spencer has revealed which type of game he would like to create more of in the coming years.

Speaking with Xbox On, Spencer said that he thinks Xbox needs to have a larger focus on RPGs in the future. Spencer pointed to the company’s past focus on the genre saying, “When I think Mass Effect 1, which I worked on, Jade Empire, Fable — I remember we had really staked out RPGs as something that was important.” Spencer continued on saying “it’s nice with The Outer Worlds coming out, Wasteland — I think RPG is an area we purposely focused on and wanted to do more.”

Spencer also mentioned however that thanks to Xbox Game Pass, genre variety has been more rampant. “As we’re watching Xbox Game Pass grow and grow, we’re seeing more genres enter, and whether it’s genres that used to be popular and coming back or creators trying new things because they have an audience that’s always there and they can think how to deliver stories to those people,” Spencer said.

Spencer saying that Microsoft would like to focus more on RPGs in the future isn’t that surprising, especially given who the company has acquired recently. Within the past year, Microsoft has purchased both inXile and Obsidian, two lauded RPG developers in the gaming industry. Combined with the fact that rumors of a Fable 4 being in the works have been running rampant for years now, it seems like Xbox Game Studios is set to have a solid slate of RPG titles in the future.

It might take some time until some of these new RPGs that Spencer would like to work on will be released, however. That said, it does seem to signify potentially what kind of exclusives we can plan to see on the forthcoming Xbox Scarlett.
