CHROMATOSE, a visual novel seeking funding on Kickstarter, is a unique blend of both JRPG and visual novel inspired by the likes of Persona 3, Catherine, and Monogatari.
The premise of CHROMATOSE is simple enough, according to the campaign page: “You’ve awakened in a strange nightmare after a fall that should have ended your life. Around you are amnesiac strangers who are also trapped in this world for their own unique reasons. Escape the collective nightmare in 12 hours or never wake up.”
Such a plot allows for a variety of character stories — ten in all — to be told, each with their own world to explore through. Players can experience 16 possible game setups based on their own personality quirks and as any good visual novel should, there are multiple endings based on the choices made during the main story.
The conversations and relationships built up during the game serve a deeper purpose, as they both strengthen and increase the effectiveness of the protagonist during turn-based card battles.
From the screenshots and trailer shown so far, the game certainly looks promising. I love the distinctive character designs and striking backgrounds. The battle system seems interesting, as you can really see the Persona derivatives including shades of the Social Link system and major arcana from tarot cards playing a narrative role.
As of this writing funding is at $10,116 out of the $22,000 goal, about 45 percent there, with 17 days to go. You can try out the free demo here and if you’re interested in supporting this Kickstarter campaign yourself you can do so here. CHROMATOSE, barring if it makes its goals by the deadline, is set to release for PC and Mac sometime in 2021.
