I had no doubt that Overwatch League was popular but I may have underestimated just how much the viewers admire it. Blizzard announced that tickets for the Overwatch League Grand Finals have sold out.
If the finals were held at the Blizzard Arena, this wouldn’t be a huge feat. However, the inaugural Overwatch League Grand Finals are being held in New York at Barclays Center, home of NBA’s Brooklyn Nets. Since May 18, the public on-sale date for the event, over 20,000 tickets have sold making it the largest eSports event to ever be held at the arena.
“We knew the Overwatch League had amazing, enthusiastic fans, but this is something else. We’re incredibly excited to play to a packed house at home of the world’s premier sports and entertainment arenas,” said Overwatch League Commissioner Nat Nanzer. “With the help of our broadcast team, our partners, and Barclays Center, we’re going to put on a first-class show for everyone in attendance, and for the millions more who will be watching online.”
BSE Global’s EVP of Programming Keith Sheldon states, “We are thrilled with the momentum behind the Overwatch League Grand Finals. Our goal at Barclays Center is to be the destination for Major eSports events. That vision is taking shape as a result of a great partnership with the talented team behind the Overwatch League.”
The Overwatch League Grand Finals will commence on July 27 and 28 where the best two teams of the playoffs will go head-to-head to become the league’s first champions. If you didn’t grab a ticket in time, you’ll be able to stream the event on the league’s official Twitch channel, the Overwatch League app, and MLG.
Before a champion can be crowned, six teams must clinch playoffs. As of right now, New York Excelsior and Los Angeles Valiant lead their respective divisions; the London Spitfire, Boston Uprising, Seoul Dynasty, and Los Angeles Gladiators round out the rest of the six. That doesn’t mean there isn’t time for Philadelphia Fusion or Houston Outlaws to take that sixth spot. Regardless of who makes it, we will know the top six after week 5 of Stage 4 ends, on Saturday, June 16. If you want to read more about Stage 4, ou can check out my predictions and see if any of them have come to fruition.
If you have been getting into the competitive spirit by watching all the action Overwatch League has to offer, you can try it for yourself by grabbing the game on Amazon now.
