Don’t hold your breath that Bruce Campbell’s Ash will be coming to Mortal Kombat 11. While rumored and quashed more than a few times, Bruce Campell seems to give the definitive word on his crossover appearance, specifically noting that he will not make an appearance as a playable fighter in the game. But that doesn’t mean we won’t see him in the Mortal Kombat universe entirely.
News comes by way of the Jim and Sam show in a new video posted yesterday. While grilling Bruce Campbell about all of the rumors regarding a possible appearance in Mortal Kombat 11, Campbell says that he is looking to set the record straight. And that record is that he is not going to be voicing a playable Ash in the fighting game.
The rumor started with a fairly skeptical leak of the upcoming Mortal Kombat roster which included Ash from the Evil Dead series. After letting the rumor mill swirl on this for a bit, Campbell KOed that rumor in a Tweet, denying any involvement in the then-upcoming project:

And while this killed the rumor for a bit, everything kicked back up with a the official trailer for Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat 11. Seen below, you can see a reference to “two more guests” that were yet to be revealed — alongside that is an iconic chainsaw sound that most everyone is attributing to Campbell’s Ash from the Evil Dead series:
Further, Bruce Campbell is feeding right into that hype by quote retweeting that trailer saying it is a “swell game” that he needs to check out:
Boy, looks like a swell game – I’ll have to check it out! https://t.co/y5b7e2zr91

After another week of rumors going off seismic charts, we finally have a bit of explanation from Bruce himself. In the interview, he explains that following the original “leak” he posted the original doctored image on Twitter as a joke — no one (either his publisher or developer NeatherRealm Studios) had discussed a potential cameo in the game. However, after tweeting his original denial, he did in fact get a call asking if he would like to have some involvement in Mortal Kombat 11.
According to Bruce Campbell, they are working on a deal to see whether Ash can make a cameo appearance in the game. This would include saying a few lines of dialogue, but would not include any kind of playable character. While this may be disheartening, Campbell says the move is intentionally being made to help hype up an upcoming Ash vs Evil Dead project that is in the works.
So far, Mortal Kombat 11 is one of the best games of 2019 coming in at a stunning 9.0 out of 10 in our review; though that isn’t to say everything is perfect. The launch has been partially marred by accusations of “severe crunch” in development and predatory microtransactions which developer NeatherRealm has addressed.
Mortal Kombat 11 is available now on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One. If you haven’t picked the game up yet, it’s currently on discount over at Amazon. Meanwhile, you can check out the full interview with Bruce Campbell below:
