The Game Awards has traditionally been known as a major place at the end of the year for game announcements, and at this year’s installment of the ceremony, Microsoft got in one of the biggest announcements with a formal reveal of the name of its next console, the Xbox Series X.
During The Game Awards 2019, Microsoft officially revealed that its next console, which was previously known as Project Scarlett, is officially called Xbox Series X, along with giving us a look at what (presumably) will be the final console. The trailer itself gives us a closer look at the system and the final reveal of the name, while also thematically tying into the console’s enhanced visual power and tech, which is being claimed as the most powerful Xbox ever released.
In terms of the name of the system itself, it seems that Microsoft is continuing its tradition of establishing Xbox as a brand and ecosystem, similar to what it has done with the later iterations of the Xbox One (such as the Xbox One X). The design of the system itself also seems to lean more towards the build of a PC-like system than what we have traditionally seen from previous Xbox consoles, perhaps tying further into the console/PC ecosystem that Microsoft has been establishing over the years.
In a blog post from Microsoft on the announcement, Xbox’s Phil Spencer explained that Xbox Series X will “set a new bar for performance, speed and compatibility, allowing you to bring your gaming legacy, thousands of games from three generations and move forward with you.” Spencer also stated that “its industrial design enables us to deliver four times the processing power of Xbox One X,” and will aim to deliver “truly immersive gameplay.” The post also confirmed that the system’s design will enable both vertical and horizontal orientation.
Alongside the reveal of the system itself, the trailer and blog post also gave us a look at the new Xbox Wireless Controller, which has been “refined to accommodate an even wider range of people,” according to Spencer. One of the other major features of the controller that was highlighted was its new Share button, which will provide Xbox players with easier access to taking in-game screenshots and videos and sharing with their friends on social media. The new controller will be coming with Xbox Series X, and will also be compatible with Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs.
As previously announced, Microsoft confirmed with the new trailer that the Xbox Series X will be coming to retailers in holiday 2020, and primed to put the system up against its main competitor, Sony’s PlayStation 5 (which will also be coming in holiday 2020).
