If you are really into Nintendo’s mobile version of Mario Kart, we may have some potentially good news for you. Reportedly, there are plans to introduce a Mario Kart Tour online multiplayer mode.
This is according to a tweet from Takashi Mochizuki from the Wall Street Journal. While there is a plan, details on that front are scarce as Nintendo could not comment on the matter. The tweet reads, “Nintendo: have plan to introduce online multiplayer mode to Mario Kart Tour smartphone game; but can’t comment any more details for now.

Mario Kart Tour has been one of Nintendo’s most successful mobile games since bringing their unique properties to smartphone devices. In just its first week, the kart racer garnered 90 million downloads in its first week. As reported by Sensor Tower, that success has continued with a total of 123.9 million downloads in its first month of release. That is over five times more than Nintendo’s runner-up, Super Mario Run, which garnered 21.8 million downloads in its first month. Surely, adding an online multiplayer mode to Mario Kart Tour will only bring more people to the game, increasing the number of downloads even more.
In terms of how well Mario Kart Tour is doing compared to other mobile games, it is fairing pretty well. In Pokemon Go‘s first month of release, which was only available in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand, it got 163 million downloads. Mario Kart Tour launched globally, so even with that advantage, Nintendo’s most successful mobile game couldn’t beat Niantic’s incredibly popular augmented reality game.
In other Nintendo related news, Nintendo recently published its second-quarter financial report, showing Fire Emblem: Three Houses selling over 2.29 million copies worldwide in just three months. It is expected to pass the series’ current best-seller, Fire Emblem Fates, which sold 2.94 million copies by the end of 2018.
Mario Kart Tour is available to download on Android and iOS devices right now.
