On January 8, SNK gave fans a first look at KOF 15, and we also learned Masami Obari will direct a special animated promotional short for the game.
Soon after the announcement, Masami Obari commented on Twitter:
Masami Obari: “I’m making a special short movie for KOF 15! This is my first time working officially with SNK in a long time. I’m very happy. Look forward to it!”
Masami Obari (@G1_BARI) January 8, 2021
Masami Obari is one of the most prolific and talented animators there is. Over the decades, Masami Obari directed several anime series and OVAs, action sequences, and anime opening animation sequences. Obari is most notably regarded as one of the best mecha anime animators there ever is, and is popular for his work on Gundam, Super Robot Wars, Gunbuster, or Bubblegum Crisis to cite a few.
In particular, if you were an anime fan in the nineties, there’s a high chance you ended up watching the Fatal Fury movies on TV or VHS. Masami Obari worked on several OVAs and movies adaptations for SNK games. Most notably Fatal Fury: Legend of the Hungry Wolf in 1992, Fatal Fury 2: The New Battle in 1993. And Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture in 1994.
The fact that Masami Obari will direct an anime short for KOF 15 is as such a huge announcement for SNK fans. I’m personally extremely eager to see what it’ll be like.
SNK finally visually revealed The King of Fighters XV this week, with a cool trailer revealing Kyo, Benimaru, Leona, Mai, K’, and Shun’ei. Another trailer will be coming the week of January 11. SNK promised news will be regularly released in 2021.
The King of Fighters XV will be launching in 2021. Platforms were not announced yet, but judging from SNK’s current trends, it’ll probably release everywhere, on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Arcade.
