Kingdom Hearts 3 stole many hearts (ba dum tss) when it released earlier this year, ushering the conclusion of the Dark Seeker Saga. But after beating the game, many players felt unsatisfied by the level of difficulty. The game itself wasn’t challenging enough, and players thought it was “too easy.”
Now, what seems like forever after the release of Kingdom Hearts 3. We finally get to see more details about the game’s new Critical Mode. During an interview with publication Gamereactor, co-director Tai Yasue revealed some more insight into what the team is working on: “We wanted to do it the right way. It’s not just superficial,” like just increasing enemy HP bars, said Yasue-san. “We added new abilities for Critical Mode.”
Kingdom Hearts 3‘s original modes let players choose how they wanted to play–from casting spells to button-mashing your enemies into oblivion–with few reasons to consider what the situation called for. But, with this new mode, you won’t be able to go into battle any way you like. Critical Mode will evidently have players thinking strategically about how they want to approach battles, before jumping in. This wasn’t expanded on specifically, but perhaps it will mean more of a focus on the cooking-based system.
If you’ve played other RPG’s before, let’s say Tales of Vesperia for example, you know that cooking played a part in the battle system. Cooked meals upped your stats and made battles easier. While that system was already present in Kingdom Hearts 3, it may be taking a larger role in assisting people with more difficult battles. You will need to be more cognizant of preparing meals for Sora, and how it will raise his stats making him a better fighter and assist you in the fight against Organization XIII.
Unfortunately, there was no news on when we can expect the Critical Mode update to roll out. Kingdom Hearts 3 is available now on PS4 and Xbox One; if you haven’t picked up the game yet, you can make sure to do so over at Amazon (for a fairly steep discount). On the other end, make sure to check out our overwhelmingly positive (spoiler-free) review of the game, as well as a deep dive on why fans of the series may be more critical of the story.
