Though the days of decoder rings and cheap-choking-hazard toys are over, it looks as though Nintendo is attempting to reinvent the wheel when it comes to packed-in promotions: the new Super Mario Cereal from Kellogg’s operates as an amiibo itself.
The box features Mario (and Cappy) about to chow down on some mushrooms and “? Blocks,” or as the boxart calls them “power-up marshmallows.” The NFC tag, which comes as part of the cereal box, allows the box to be used even after the cereal has been devoured.
The Nintendo tie-in here is clearly aimed at Super Mario Odyssey — specifically, the amiibo can be used to receive gold coins or a heart in the game. While a box of this cereal will become an instant collector’s item for sure, it also provides gamer the opportunity to use amiibo at a third the cost of one of the plastic-pedestaled figurines.
The cereal itself is a limited-edition, and you should expect to start seeing them on shelves on and after December 11.
Super Mario Odyssey released to critical acclaim and is available now on the Nintendo Switch. You can check out our review of the game here, or catch up on how the game is doing for sales in Japan here.
