Today’s Blizzcon stream was full of news from Blizzard Entertainment. The studio dropped tons of info about the upcoming Diablo IV. A big World of Warcraft expansion was revealed. And, of course, Jeff Kaplan gave the audience a deep dive into Overwatch 2. In the midst of all that, the Hearthstone team took to the stage to pull back the curtain on an exciting new game mode and announce the next expansion.
Hearthstone Battlegrounds is Blizzard’s take on the popular new auto-battler genre. The mode sees you fighting against seven other players in a deeply strategic new experience. You’ll play as one of many famous Hearthstone heroes and recruit s team of minions to use in a series of duels. It looks like a fun mash-up of Blizzard’s card game and the auto-chess games that have been blowing up this year.
Descent of Dragons is your next Hearthstone expansion. It will add 135 new cards to the rotation, along with several new mechanics. On the stage, we got an in-depth look at some of the new dragon cards coming to the game and how they’ll use the new Invoke keyword. I haven’t been playing much Hearthstone lately, but it definitely looked like the expansion will inject some new life into the game.
Both the game mode and the expansion will launch later this year. Hearthstone Battlegrounds will go into early access on November 5 and start open beta a week later. The mode will come to PC and mobile sometime after that. However, it will require more than 2 GB of RAM on mobile, so older phones might not play well with the mode. Descent of Dragons will likewise come to PC and mobile. It doesn’t have a firm release date yet but should be out by the year’s end.
