After a thirteen-year hiatus, Half-Life is finally returning in 2020.
As promised today, Valve officially revealed Half-Life: Alyx, the studio’s new VR title. As previous rumors indicated, Alyx is set between Half-Life and Half-Life 2 and places you in the shoes of Alyx Vance. The story follows Alyx and her father Eli as they fight back against the Combine in the iconic City 17.
Valve released the first trailer for the game today and personally, I think it looks fantastic. For a VR title, the visuals that are on display here look remarkable. There’s a stunning level of detail not only in the environment, but in Alyx’s hands and the tools she is interacting with.
I was really hesitant coming into this reveal that it would just be a cheap, knockoff version of Half-Life in VR, but Alyx really seems like something that Valve has put a ton of care into. We obviously haven’t seen raw gameplay from the title just yet, but what’s on display here looks quite good.
Perhaps best of all, Half-Life: Alyx is also set to release far sooner than you might think. Valve has the title slated to launch next year in March 2020 as of now. It’ll be available for play on the Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality. While Valve is clearly making this title to potentially convince consumers to pick up their own VR headset, at least they’re not making it solely exclusive to their platform.
