For Overwatch fans around the world, last week was a major event with the start of the next season of the Overwatch League, and even though it was a big enough event all by itself, the event was made even more special with an unexpected guest appearance from the one and only Gritty.
During the opening match of Overwatch League’s second season–a match which paired last year’s Overwatch League winners the London Spitfire against their competitors, the Philadelphia Fusion–the Philadelphia Flyers’ mascot Gritty made a surprise appearance at the event to help fans cheer on the Philly-based team to their eventual victory (Fusion beat Spitfire in a 2-0 match).
For a look at Gritty’s grand entrance at the Overwatch League season 2 opener, you can watch the clip on Twitch below (via CulturedHonorableJellyfishNotLikeThis):
For those that may not be familiar with this bizarre-looking orange monstrosity, Gritty was introduced as the Philadelphia Flyers’ new mascot last September and quickly gained the attention not only from the sports world, but from the Internet at large thanks to his comical appearance and willingness to embrace the meme culture of the Internet.
We even made the case last month that the NHL should embrace his rapidly-building fandom by putting Gritty on the cover of the upcoming NHL 20. Though the cover art is usually reserved for the most high profile hockey players in the nation, we think that at this point, Gritty is very much deserving of the chance to grab this year’s spotlight on a major AAA video game, thanks to the enthusiasm he showed at the Overwatch League last week.
