Coming two years after the success of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, fans of the series won’t have too long to wait until the next chapter with the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. As revealed this week by Ubisoft, Valhalla will take the franchise into the times of vikings, which may have some similarities with 2018’s critically-acclaimed God of War. However, despite some of the common elements shared between both games, God of War‘s Cory Barlog has openly expressed his support of the setting for the latest chapter in the Assassin’s Creed franchise.
On Twitter, Cory Barlog shared a few tweets in response to the reveal of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which was confirmed to be set in the era of vikings and appears to share some similar elements to the Norse mythology-inspired setting of God of War. Specifically, one of the biggest parts of the reveal that Barlog seemed to address was his excitement at the prospects of seeing this setting through the eyes other creatives.
According to Barlog, while God of War and Valhalla may have some surface-level similarities, he said that the Norse myths “will persevere through the ages providing countless creatives a deep well to pull from,” and that he is “very excited” to play Valhalla when it releases later this year. Specifically, developers from the team at Ubisoft addressed the comparisons to God of War in an interview with GameSpot, and that they hope to make Valhalla “the ultimate grounded Viking fantasy.”
Huzzah to my friends @Ubisoft on the really cool reveal of your next game:

No one should be worried. The myths have been around a long time and will persevere through the ages providing countless creatives a deep well to pull from – provided they are willing to sacrifice an eye for the knowledge.

The viking-themed setting of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has been rumored for quite some time, even around the time shortly after the release of God of War and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey in 2018. This might have led to some speculation from fans that the next Assassin’s Creed game would maybe draw too closely to the inspirations that God of War used. But as Barlog said, there is a ton of potential for Ubisoft and its developers to take these well-known myths and create something new from them, especially in the historical focus of the Assassin’s Creed series. At the very least – maybe we can hope for some kind of Kratos and Atreus cameo in Valhalla?
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will release for PS5, Xbox Series X, PS4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PC in holiday 2020.
